REJECT EXTREMES

Look. Closer.

The extremes hyperfocus on a handful of complex, incendiary issues, policies, candidates. Rather than promote civil discourse, extremists quickly devolve into name calling, anger, vitriol, distraction. When their audience falls for it, it is held up as evidence there is no common ground left to work toward.

Who wins when as a result the majority end up forming generalized, cynical, uninformed views of candidates, issues, our very ability (or inability) to coexist, innovate, and grow? Adversary countries, corrupt political parties, single interest lobbyists,... Definitely not us, the majority of Americans.

Diversity of experience, beliefs, backgrounds is our strength.

BE BRAVE

Bravery is speaking up for those who cannot. It is running to help instead of running away. Yet being brave is more than just those heroic moments which manifest themselves physically. To be brave is also to be willing to explore new ideas, opinions, and solutions. It is developing a tolerance for discomfort in the service of growth.

Face your fears with determined curiosity.

STAY AUTHENTIC

Each individual makes the whole stronger through the cultivation of their unique interests/hobbies, the respectful expression of their beliefs, and the sharing of their diverse experiences. We are not meant to be the same, not meant to mold ourselves into copies of each other, not meant to blend in as sheep.

Be you as only you can be.

FOCUS INTENTION

The concept of focused intention is rooted in the metaphor of the stoic archer. The archer's obligation is to prepare and execute the shot as well as possible; however, the archer's responsibility for the outcome ends as soon as the arrow leaves the bow. Focus intention means to focus on what we can control so completely that we do not let fear of outcomes we cannot control, including perceived success or failure, prevent us from acting.

Do your very best, then let it go.

KEEP HUMOR

The world is a serious place in which humanity is grappling with significant issues. There is also humor to be found in the absurdity of our condition. In fact, rather than detracting from our most worthwhile endeavors, affiliative humor and self-enhancing humor have both been found to strengthen social bonds, improving our ability to tackle the challenges of life.

Laughter is the shortest distance between us.
